Question of the Week (w/e March 10, 2002):
Would you rather die painlessly, surrounded by loved ones, at age 50;
or a slow, painful death alone at age 90? Why?
(Assume that you would be healthy during the final 40 years of your life.) |

Comments: I believe I would chose to die alone and painfully at age 90
for the simple fact that I would like to have more time to
do things on this earth. I enjoy helping people and sharing
my faith with them... and I can't turn down an extra 40
years to do so, just because I want to have an easy,
peaceful death.

Comments:
I think I would rather die at 50 surrounded by friends and family rather than at 90 alone. If I had all my loved ones around me, I'd have one last chance to reconcile with them if needed. If I were alone at 90, there's a good chance that it was because I had done something to offend them, leaving me to die without being able to say I'm sorry, and that would perpetuate a whole lot of bitterness that shouldn't be there.

Comments:I think the longer we live the better for those around us. In a selfish moment I might say 50, but I think if I had to pick I like the thought of knowing my grandchildren and great grandchildren, as well as the other relationships in my life. That joy of those relationships might actually seems stronger than the pain and suffering for a longer life.

Comments:I imagine I would prefer the age 80 scenario, since I would probably not have experienced everything that I want to experience by age fifty. It may be selfish, but I would want to outlast my family and friends so I don't have to abandon them.
